Welcome to Surgical Anatomy

"I wish someone would have told me this" … is the guiding principle of this website. You will find important knowledge here helping you through your surgical residency and as you start practice. Before you tackle a case, come here to gain those bits of information that will enhance your comfort level and ability to do the case.

Educational efficiency comes from a clear format.  Each chapter addresses an organ or organ system.  Each section within the chapter is based on a surgical operation and is divided into 3 elements: Incision, Dissection (the operative technique), and Clinical (correlations).

Many surgeons are visual and tactile learners. Visual data acquisition is supported by the drawings, photos, and composites. Tactile learning comes from performing these procedures in the cadaver lab. Consider the lab your “flight simulator” where mistakes are not ascribed and discovery can come more easily in a low cost, low risk environment. The cadaver is the only high fidelity simulator for surgery. You have arrived at this learning environment dedicated to you, the surgical resident.

So, turn on some music, get some instruments, and away we go…………
