Inpatient Call
Purpose
To provide you with an opportunity to learn about and participate in admitting and caring for hospitalized pediatric patients. This period should also provide you with the opportunity to spend more time with children and the very common but important procedures associated with pediatric care, that is, playing, feeding, diaper changing, administering medications. This is also an opportunity to spend time in the nursery. Finally, many procedures from the scavenger hunt may be accomplished during this time.
Schedule
Home-based call with responsibility to both hospitals. 7 a.m.–7 a.m. weekdays; 7 a.m. Friday to 7 a.m. Monday weekends. We will provide an initial schedule; however, in an attempt to provide you with more flexibility, you may switch call with your colleagues.
Each morning you begin call, please notify pediatric ward clerk and pediatrician on call's office at each institution of your name and page number so they may reach you for patient admits. See important numbers section for contact information.
Weekend Call
On Friday, please contact pediatricians on call and coordinate rounding for weekend with at least one of them. Discuss which patients you will be covering and have your patients seen, progress notes completed and orders written prior to the start of rounds. Also, take advantage of this time to work with the pediatrician on call while they make nursery rounds.
