The purpose of this form is to help provide guidance over recording course lectures using the course capture devices located throughout the School of Medicine and Health Sciences at the University of North Dakota (UNDSMHS).
Recording of Lectures
Information Resources will record course lectures and instruction in all programs listed in Section II. The recording schedule will be set automatically by the beginning of each instruction period. Once completed, the recorded lectures will be posted on the SMHS servers. Recorded lectures are made available to the faculty, students, and other persons designated as authorized to view the material by the faculty member, Department Chair/Program Director, or the Dean of the School of Medicine & Health Sciences.
Opt Out Procedure
Faculty and other presenters may choose not to record and/or distribute their lecture presentations by communicating this preference to the audiovisual personnel. This preference must be communicated in advance, preferably prior to the beginning of the block. Lectures will not be recorded without obtaining expressed written permission from faculty members.
Reliability/Malfunctions
UNDSMHS does not guarantee that all lectures will be recorded or that the recordings will be of a sufficiently good quality as to be audible, clear or useful. Technical malfunctions are likely to occur from time to time. Students are advised to attend lectures rather than relying on the availability of recordings.
Permissions
By agreeing to be recorded and not opting out from being recorded as provided above, presenters agree that UND School of Medicine may record or digitize their lecture presentations, may copy the recordings, using analog, digital or other media, and may broadcast, stream, display, perform or distribute the lecture presentations through a restricted access server using password protection or equivalent. UND School of Medicine or any other party shall not use or copy the recordings other than for access as described in this form without written permission of the presenter.
Password protection
Access to recorded lecture presentations will be restricted through the use of passwords assigned to students enrolled in the programs listed in Section II. Faculty members at UNDSMHS who are associated with the programs listed in Section II may also access the recordings by requesting a password from UNDSMHS Information Resources.
Retention of Recordings
Recordings will be made available to students in the same manner as other course materials and in accordance with established policies and procedures. Recordings will be destroyed in accordance with established policies and procedures.
Other Uses Prohibited
Recordings cannot be used for subsequent versions of the same course, other courses, or other venues without the express written permission of the presenters. Presenters may use their own recordings for professional development. Any other uses of the recordings, including administrative and/or peer review, require the express written permission of the presenter.
Copyright Notices and Permissions
Presenters are responsible for securing any required copyright permissions for any lecture materials that are not their original work, or for determining that the fair use doctrine or an exemption or license applies to any third party copyright protected material used in their lectures. All third party materials used in any lecture should be designated using copyright notices and attribution.
Student Responsibilities
Lectures are captured for educational purposes only. If any recorded lecture is posted on any non-SMHS network site, SMHS deems this to be a violation of the UND Code of Student Life policy on Information Policy Technologies (page 40). As such, UNDSMHS will seek to discipline to the full extent allowed those found to be responsible for the posting.
