Grading Criteria
Day-to-day performance during the clerkship is 2/3 of the final grade:
- Faculty evaluations of student's clinical performance = 1/3.
- Student’s portfolio: H&Ps and LIs, departmental exam, *Clerkship Director's score = 1/3.
* The Clerkship Director's score is composed of
- Clinical Cases (complete and timely)
- Didactics (preparation and response)
- Patient database (quality and quantity)
- EKG cases (complete and timely)
Evaluation scale is as follows:
> 50% exceeds expectations
50% meets expectations
< 50% below expectations
Performance on the National Board Subject Examination in Internal Medicine comprises 1/3 of the final grade.
Requirements for a Satisfactory Grade
- Mean clinical evaluation score of 1.0.
- Satisfactory completion of portfolio.
- NBME Subject exam score of annualized 8th percentile or better (this is usually in the low 60s, but varies from year to year).
Determination of Class Rank
- Points will be awarded for each of the three criteria:
- Faculty evaluations of clinical performance (33.3%)
- Portfolio, departmental exam, Clerkship Director's score (33.3%)
- Score on the NBME (33.3%)
- A total score will be calculated by the formula:
Total points =
0.333 (clinical performance) + 0.333 (.067 Clerkship Director's eval, .133 physical diagnosis exam, .133 two H&Ps and two LIs) + 0.333 (NBME)- At the end of the academic year, all students from the three campuses will be ranked by total score.
- Total scores will not be used to determine if a student passes the clerkship. Total scores will be used only to determine class rank and Honors grades.
Requirements for Honors Grade
- All requirements for a Satisfactory grade must be met without remediation.
- Mean clinical evaluation score in the top 50%.
- Total score in the top 20% of the class.
