Faculty Evaluation of Student's Clinical Performance
Criteria
See copies of the evaluation forms and the sections on "Goals" and "Student Responsibilities" elsewhere in this manual for details of the criteria. Only the ratings of overall clinical competence will be used to calculate a grade. Ratings of individual criteria are used for feedback purposes only.
Mid-Clerkship Feedback
The clerkship director on each campus will meet with each student near the midpoint of the clerkship to seek the student's self-assessment, review faculty evaluations of the student's clinical performance, review the student's patient contact data, review the student's patient write-up, address the student's concerns, and to collaboratively develop an educational plan for the second half of the clerkship.
Summative Evaluation
Faculty ratings of overall clinical competence will be used.
4 (exceptional) = 100 points
3 (advanced) = 90 points
2 (proficient/competent) = 80 points
1 (minimally meets expectations) = 70 points
0 (does not meet expectations) = 0 points
All ratings from a given four-week block will be used to calculate a mean score for the four-week block; then the mean scores from the four-week blocks will be used to calculate a cumulative mean score. The cumulative mean score will account for one-third of the final course grade.
Remediation
Any student who receives a mean score for clinical performance of less than 1.0 will receive a grade of Unsatisfactory for the clerkship and may be required to repeat some or all of the clerkship.
