Purpose: To provide education and experience in
the diagnosis and care of patients requiring orthopedic surgery services.
1. Demonstrate basic knowledge of functional musculoskeletal anatomy.
2. Perform history and physical examination of orthopedic patients and make recommendations for care.
3. Evaluate, diagnose and treat patients with common ambulatory orthopedic complaints.
4. Evaluate orthopedic conditions in pediatric patients regarding deformities and growth patterns.
5. Demonstrate basic technical skills in the care and management of orthopedic patients (e.g., arthrocentesis, cast application and removal, etc.).
6. Coordinate physician treatment with ancillary services including physical therapy, occupational therapy, laboratory, radiology, and other clinical services.
1. Diagnosis and treatment of orthopedic conditions of clinic, hospitalized, and emergency room patients.
2. Daily discussion of patientsŐ cases seen with the preceptor utilizing a question and answer method.
3. Performing technical procedures under the guidance of the preceptor.
4. Assisting in minor and/or major orthopedic surgery cases.
5. Participating in didactic sessions during latter part of elective in order to gain knowledge in basic orthopedic problems not encountered earlier the rotation.
6. Reading assignments in basic ambulatory orthopedic care.
1. Evaluate by direct observation the studentŐs capability to take thorough histories, perform orthopedic examinations, and propose management strategies and discuss complications, discussing complications of these strategies.
2. Evaluate by direct observation the performance of basic orthopedic skills throughout the elective, the quality of the studentŐs oral presentations, and the ability to critically analyze the patientŐs orthopedic condition.
3. Evaluate by discussion method the studentŐs knowledge gained from assigned readings.
4. Evaluate the student's attitude, behavior, professional appearance, and intellectual curiosity.
5. Utilize the standardized UNDSMHS senior elective form.
