Purpose:  To provide education and experience in the care of patients requiring urology services..

                

Objectives:  Following successful completion of this elective, the student will be able to:

 

1.     Demonstrate knowledge of the anatomy and embryology of the urinary tract.

2.     Obtain a pertinent history and physical regarding the urinary system.

3.     Discuss basic diagnostic procedures and the appropriate indications for these procedures.

4.     Discuss the evaluation and treatment of common female uro-gynecologic problems and male urological problems. 

5.     Discuss urology instruments utilized in the operating room.

Instructional Activities:  During this elective, the student will be involved in/experience:

 

1.     Reading assignments and discussions with preceptor on a variety of diseases encountered in urology care.

2.     Participating in the care of patients requiring urology services, and assisting the preceptor on hospital rounds.

3.     Observing and participating in diagnostic procedures, interpreting radiologic films, and examining pathologic slides with the preceptor.

4.     Assisting the preceptor in the operating room commensurate with experience.

Criteria for Grading:  During and following this elective, the preceptor will:

 

1.     Evaluate the student's history and physical examination skills for accuracy and thoroughness.

2.     Evaluate by direct observation the student's knowledge and the quality of his/her clinical reasoning and judgment in providing patient care.

3.     Evaluate studentŐs professionalism and quality of completed assignments.

4.     Utilize the standardized UNDSMHS senior elective evaluation form.
