Purpose: To provide education and experience in
the care of patients requiring advanced general surgery services.
Objectives: Following successful completion of this elective, the student
will be able to:
1. Discuss fundamental principles in the treatment of cardiovascular and pulmonary disorders.
2. Perform pre-operative assessment and basic post-operative management of surgical patients.
3. Discuss the pharmacology of cardiac and pulmonary drugs commonly used in the care of surgical ICU
patients.
4. Demonstrate the uses, techniques and complications of hemodynamic monitoring.
5. Perform common procedures (e.g., chest tube insertion, central line insertion) under the guidance of the
preceptor.
