ICU ROTATION – Cardiovascular Surgery, Anesthesiology & Physiology

Purpose:  To provide education and experience in the care of patients requiring advanced general surgery services.

 

Objectives: Following successful completion of this elective, the student will be able to:

 

1.  Discuss fundamental principles in the treatment of cardiovascular and pulmonary disorders.

2.  Perform pre-operative assessment and basic post-operative management of surgical patients.

3.  Discuss the pharmacology of cardiac and pulmonary drugs commonly used in the care of surgical ICU

      patients.

4.  Demonstrate the uses, techniques and complications of hemodynamic monitoring.

5.  Perform common procedures (e.g., chest tube insertion, central line insertion) under the guidance of the

      preceptor.

 

Instructional Activities: During this elective, the student will be involved in/experience:

 

  1. Performing history and physical examinations and assisting with pre- and post-operative inpatient management of surgical patients during and following ICU admission.
  2. Discussing and reviewing therapeutic alternatives with the preceptor.
  3. Assigned reading and discussion of surgical topics and attend teaching conferences.
  4. Daily reviews of the physiological principles in the management of patients on the surgery ICU service.
  5. Assisting the anesthesiologist and perfusionist during selected CV surgery cases.

 

Criteria for Grading: During and following this elective, the preceptor will:

 

  1. Evaluate by question and answer method the studentŐs knowledge of the physiological principles as related to the management of the surgery ICU patient. 

2.     Evaluate the studentŐs professionalism as observed during patient care activities in the clinic and hospital

      setting.

3.     Evaluate by direct observation the studentŐs clinical and operative skills.

4.     Utilize the standardized UNDSMHS senior elective evaluation form.
