Purpose: Provide experience in the diagnosis and care
of orthopedic problems in the outpatient, inpatient and emergency room
settings.
1. Increase basic knowledge of functional musculoskeletal anatomy.
2. Perform history and physical examination of orthopedic patients and to make recommendations for care.
3. Evaluate, diagnose and treat patients with common ambulatory orthopedic complaints.
4. Evaluate orthopedic conditions in pediatric patients regarding deformities and growth patterns.
5. Develop basic technical skills in the care and management of orthopedic patients (e.g., arthrocentesis, cast application and removal, etc.).
6. Correlate physician treatment with ancillary services including physical therapy, occupational therapy, laboratory, radiology, and other clinical services.
1. Diagnosis and treatment of orthopedic conditions of clinic, hospitalized, and emergency room patients.
2. Daily discussion of patients seen with question and answer session.
3. Observation of technical performance by preceptor, followed by student performance when appropriate.
4. Assist in minor and/or major orthopedic surgery cases.
5. Didactic sessions during latter part of elective to cover basic orthopedic problems not encountered during the rotation.
6. Assigned reading to ensure that an exposure to basic ambulatory orthopedic care has been adequately experienced and/or discussed.
1. Observe the student’s capacity to take thorough history, perform orthopedic examination, and propose treatment with knowledge of complications of such treatment.
2. Evaluate actual performance of basic orthopedic skill throughout the elective and assess student’s oral presentation and critical analysis of the patient’s orthopedic condition.
3. Assign daily recommended reading related to current problems encountered, followed by discussion between preceptor and student.
4. Monitor the student's attitudes, behavior, professional appearance, and intellectual curiosity.
5. Utilize the standardized UNDSMHS senior elective evaluation form.
