Purpose:  Purpose:  Learn ophthalmologic surgery and care of ocular disorders in an inpatient/outpatient setting.

Objectives:  Following successful completion of this elective, the student will be able to:

1.     Identify basic anatomy of the eye and become knowledgeable in ocular physiology and pharmacology.

2.     Become comfortable in the use of ophthalmologic instrumentation.

3.     Give a basic ophthalmological eye examination.

4.     Recognize the normal eye versus abnormal eye states.

5.     Examine and treat basic ocular diseases, as well as presentation of systemic diseases and emergencies involving the eye.

Instructional Activities:  During this elective, the student will be involved in/experience:

1.     Work-up and follow-up of ophthalmic patients under the direction of the preceptor.

2.     Spend a minimum amount of time in surgery to obtain the objectives of the course.

3.     See most of the eye patients in a clinical setting with the preceptor.

4.     Complete assigned readings in standard ophthalmology texts.

Criteria for Grading:  During and following this elective, the preceptor will:

1.     Evaluate overall professionalism, attendance, conduct, performance, and attitude of each student.

2.     Judge the studentŐs proficiency of skills in clinical setting and supervised patient care activities.

3.     Review the studentŐs level of understanding of assigned reading.

4.     Utilize the standardized UNDSMHS senior elective evaluation form.
