Purpose:   To provide education and experience in the care of patients requiring general or orthopedic surgery services.

                 

Objectives: Following successful completion of this elective, the student will be able to:

 

1.     Demonstrate orthopedic and general surgery skills and knowledge beyond that expected of a third year student.

2.     Perform basic suturing and placement of central lines.

3.     Demonstrate skills required to function as a first year resident.

4.   Discuss the principles of fracture management including the correct and safe application of casts.

5.   Demonstrate the proper assessment of common musculoskeletal injuries.

 

Instructional Activities: During this elective, the student will be involved in/experience:

 

1.     The perioperative management of general surgical patients.

2.     Fluid and electrolyte management of surgical patients.

3.     The evaluation and management of surgery patients in the emergency room.

4.     The application of casts in fracture management.

5.     The evaluation and management of orthopedic injuries.        

6.     The assessment of musculoskeletal diseases.

 

Criteria for Grading: During and following this acting internship, the preceptor will:

 

1.     Evaluate by direct observation the clinical skills of the student in the clinic and hospital including the operating room.

2.     Evaluate by direct observation the studentŐs professional behavior and interaction with nurses, students, residents and faculty.

3.     Evaluate by direct observation the studentŐs ability to perform a complete assessment of common musculoskeletal injuries and the quality of the studentŐs skill in cast application.

4.     Evaluate the studentŐs ability to perform preoperative histories and physical examinations.

5.     Evaluate the studentŐs skills in basic postoperative management of surgical patients..

      6.   Utilize the standardized UNDSMHS senior elective evaluation form.
