Offered:   All periods, 1 student/period    (July and August rotations limited to students interested in Urology as a career choice)

Objectives of the Elective:

  1. Understand what is meant by the geniturinary tract.
  2. Know with some degree of certainty the functions of the kidney, prostrate, bladder, and urethra.
  3. See and understand the use of urologic instruments.
  4. Understand indications for urologic x-rays and basic interpretation.
  5. Accompany urologists to the OR for cases known and/or recently discussed and follow the cases to completion.

Instructional Activities:

  1. Read basic urologic text while on service.
  2. Read disease process and treatment prior to seeing the case.
  3. Question decisions of preceptor.  (Read up in advance so the questions can have a knowledgeable base.)
  4. Be prepared for detailed questioning on anatomy and physiology of urologic disease processes student has seen.

Standards of Performance (Outcomes) Indicating Attainment of Objectives:

  1. Satisfactory completion of recommended reading.
  2. Follow-up of disease process and patients independently and as requested.

Criteria for Grading:

  1. Knowledge at their level.
  2. Individual study and initiative.
  3. Preparation for a disease process; e.g., prior to surgery, nephrectomy for hypernephroma.
