Objectives of the Elective:

  1. Learn  to conduct a systematic eye history and examination, including the use of the slit lamp  and ophthalmoscope.
  2. Treat commonly seen "red eye" problems.
  3. To understand the diagnosis and management of cataract, diabetic eye disease, glaucoma, amblyopia, strabismus, ocular motility disorders and optic neuropathies.
  4. To assist in ocular surgery.
  5. To learn about the latest in laser vision correction procedures.

Instructional Activities:

  1. Daily participation in clinics/surgery.
  2. Assigned readings.
  3. Assist in O.R.
  4. Case and topic discussions.

Standards of Performance (Outcome) Indicating Attainment of Objectives:

  1. Abilities demonstrated in using the slit-lamp, tonopen, and ophthalmoscope.
  2. Demonstration of understanding the diagnosis and management of diabetic eye disease, glaucoma, cataract and ocular motility through discussions.
  3. Completion of reading assignments.

Criteria for Grading:

  1. Attendance.
  2. Demonstration of understanding reading assignments through discussions.
