Objectives of the Elective:

  1. To be able to conduct a systematic eye history and examination, including the use of the slit lamp biomicroscope and direct ophthalmoscope.
  2. To diagnose and treat conjunctivitis, corneal abrasions/foreign bodies and dry eye syndrome.
  3. To understand the diagnosis and management of cataract, diabetic eye disease, glaucoma, amblyopia, strabismus, ocular motility disorders and optic neuropathies.
  4. To assist in ocular surgery.

Instructional Activities:

  1. Daily clinics in the ophthalmology department.
  2. Assigned readings in Lange's Ophthalmology and Spalton's Atlas of Clinical Ophthalmology.
  3. Surgical assisting.
  4. Case and topic discussions.
  5. We recommend that students purchase Basic Ophthalmology for Medical Students and Primary Care Residents, by Frank G. Berson, M.D., American Academy of Ophthalmology, 1993.

Standards of Performance (Outcome) Indicating Attainment of Objectives:

  1. Abilities demonstrated in using the slit-lamp biomicroscope and direct ophthalmoscope.
  2. Demonstration of understanding the diagnosis and management of diabetic eye disease, glaucoma, cataract and ocular motility through discussions.
  3. Completion of reading assignments.

Criteria for Grading:

  1. Attendance.
  2. Demonstration of understanding reading assignments through discussions.
