Objectives of the Elective:

  1. Develop skills in the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the foot and ankle and related systems.
  2. Learn diagnostic techniques including physical exam of a patient with foot and ankle disorders.
  3. Emphasis on diabetic foot care--diagnostic and treatment modalities.
  4. Develop surgical skills--common office procedures.
  5. Assist with the care of the surgical patient.

Instructional Activities:

  1. Daily clinic patients.
  2. Inpatient and outpatient surgery--MeritCare Hospital/Same Day Surgery.
  3. Weekly lecture.
  4. Assigned journal/text reading.
  5. Chronic Wound Clinic 1 day/week.

Standards of Performance (Outcomes) Indicating Attainment of Objectives:

  1. Based on direct observation of the student's skills in examination procedures, as well as surgical procedures.
  2. Discussions related to appropriate topics including physical exams, diabetic foot care, foot/ankle trauma.
  3. A written evaluation of the student will be completed and sent to the assistant dean.

Criteria for Grading:

  1. Daily attendance.
  2. Conversant in diagnostic skills and appropriate treatment modalities.
  3. Completion of assigned reading materials.
