Objectives of the Elective:
-
Develop skills in the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the foot
and ankle and related systems.

Learn diagnostic techniques including physical exam of a patient with foot
and ankle disorders.
-
Emphasis on diabetic foot care--diagnostic and treatment modalities.
-
Develop surgical skills--common office procedures.
-
Assist with the care of the surgical patient.
Instructional Activities:
-
Daily clinic patients.
-
Inpatient and outpatient surgery--MeritCare Hospital/Same Day Surgery.
-
Weekly lecture.
-
Assigned journal/text reading.
-
Chronic Wound Clinic 1 day/week.
Standards of Performance (Outcomes) Indicating Attainment of Objectives:
-
Based on direct observation of the student's skills in examination procedures,
as well as surgical procedures.
-
Discussions related to appropriate topics including physical exams, diabetic
foot care, foot/ankle trauma.
-
A written evaluation of the student will be completed and sent to the assistant
dean.
Criteria for Grading:
-
Daily attendance.
-
Conversant in diagnostic skills and appropriate treatment modalities.
-
Completion of assigned reading materials.
