Objectives of the Elective:

  1. Orient student to different procedures performed in an imaging department.
  2. Teach the student the appropriate uses for the various procedures.
  3. Review basic radiographic anatomy.
  4. Reinforce the need for appropriate clinical information when ordering studies.
  5. Train the student to use the radiologist as a consultant.

Instructional Activities:

  1. American College of Radiology teaching file on video disc.
  2. Teaching file of interesting cases from United Hospital.
  3. Film reading sessions with radiology staff.
  4. Discussions regarding technical aspects of various radiology procedures.
  5. Discussion about appropriate use of various imaging procedures.

Standards of Performance (Outcomes) Indicating Attainment of Objectives:

  1. Read standard texts available in the department.
  2. Review teaching file cases.
  3. Select five cases to correlate to radiologic, clinical and pathologic findings and add these to the teaching file.

Criteria for Grading:

  1. Satisfactory rating or above on all appropriate clinical competences listed on the 4th year student clinical performance evaluation.
  2. Level of interest and knowledge as subjectively graded by department staff.
