Pediatric Endocrinology and Metabolism

Periods offered and number of students per period:  All/l per period

Purpose:  To gain clinical experience in pediatric endocrinology.

Objectives of the Elective:  Following successful completion of this elective, the student will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate ability to obtain a pertinent pediatric endocrinology history, perform appropriate physical exam, and formulate reasonable differential diagnoses and management plans.
  2. Discuss both normal and abnormal growth and pubertal development in children and adolescents.
  3. Recognize the signs and symptoms of the onset of Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes in children and adolescents.
  4. Report the practice guideline management of diabetic ketoacidosis.
  5. Demonstrate a working knowledge of the most common metabolic disorders of childhood.
  6. Demonstrate the ability to evaluate children with suspected hypothyroidism.
  7. Describe the evaluation of a baby born with ambiguous genitalia.

Instructional Activities:  During the elective, the student will be involved in/experience:

  1. The work-up and follow-up of all patients admitted to the preceptor as well as those seen in consultation.
  2. The work-up and follow-up of both general and endocrine patients in the outpatient setting.
  3. Morning rounds with the preceptor.
  4. On call with the preceptor which also involves general pediatrics.
  5. A core curriculum of pediatric endocrinology and metabolism, emphasizing common pediatric endocrine and metabolic disorders.
  6. Discussion with the preceptor of assigned readings.
  7. Case presentation at Pediatric Grand Rounds.

Criteria for Grading:  During and following this elective, the preceptor will:

  1. Evaluate the timeliness and professional behavior of the student.
  2. Evaluate by direct observation the student's ability to evaluate children with short stature, delayed puberty, precocious puberty, sexual ambiguity, diabetes mellitus, and abnormal state-required newborn metabolic screening test results.
  3. Utilize the standardized UNDSMHS senior elective form.
