Positions Offered: One/period
Purpose: To provide
education and experience in the care of newborns.
Objectives: Following
successful completion of this elective, the student will be able to:
- Perform a physical examination and assessment of normal
newborns as well as ill preterm and term newborns.
- Demonstrate the principles of resuscitation and
stabilization of the newborn.
- Report common diagnostic and management problems of the
ill newborn.
- Demonstrate an understanding of fluid, electrolyte and
nutritional management of both preterm and term infants.
- Anticipate the expected complications of neonates born
to mothers with high risk pregnancies.
Instructional
Activities: During
this elective, the student will be involved in/experience:
- Daily patient rounds in which the student is
responsible for forming appropriate assessment and care plans.
- Daily discussions of specific patient problems based on
the reading and instructional assignments given to the student by the
preceptor.
- Attendance at c-section and
high risk deliveries.
- Common procedures performed in the setting of neonatal
intensive care under the close supervision of the preceptor.
- The calculation of enteral and parenteral nutritional
requirements of the neonate.
- Weekly core curriculum lectures.
- A team approach (including family involvement) to the
management of the ill neonate.
Criteria for
Grading: During
and following this elective, the preceptor will:
- Evaluate the quality of patient evaluations and daily
notes.
- Evaluate the quality of performance of the instructed
procedures.
- Evaluate the quality of oral and written presentations
of assigned readings.
- Utilize the standardized UNDSMHS senior elective
evaluation form.
