Purpose:  To provide education and clinical experience in care of newborns who require the service of a neonatologist.

Objectives:  Following successful completion of this elective, the student will be able to:

  1. Perform physical examinations and assessments of normal newborns (preterm and term).
  2. Demonstrate the principles of resuscitation and stabilization of the newborn.
  3. Report common diagnostic and management problems of the ill newborn.
  4. Demonstrate an understanding of fluid, electrolyte and nutritional management of both preterm and term infants.
  5. Anticipate the expected complications of neonates born to mothers with high risk pregnancies.
  6. Explain the value of the team approach to the management of Neonatal Intensive Care patients including involvement of the family.

Instructional Activities: During this elective, the student will be involved in/experience:

  1. Daily patient rounds in which the student is responsible for forming appropriate assessment and care plans.
  2. Daily discussion of specific patient problems based on the reading and instructional assignments given to the student by the preceptor.
  3. Attendance at c-section and high risk deliveries.
  4. Common procedures performed in the setting of neonatal intensive care under the close supervision of the preceptor.
  5. The calculation of enteral and parenteral nutritional requirements of the neonate.
  6. Weekly core curriculum lectures.
  7. A team approach (including family involvement) to the management of the neonate.
  8. Patient case presentations to the preceptors.

Criteria for Grading: During and following this elective, the preceptor will:

  1. Evaluate the quality of patient evaluations and daily notes.
  2. Evaluate the quality of performance of the instructed procedures.
  3. Evaluate the quality of assigned oral and written presentations.
  4. Utilize the standardized UNDSMHS senior elective evaluation form.
