Offered:  4 week rotation by arrangement - senior students only

Objectives of the Elective:

  1. This elective is designed for those individuals interested in women's health issues.  Appropriate for students interested in Ob/Gyn, Internal Medicine, or Family Practice.
  2. Provide a greater understanding of women's health needs and to understand elements of preventive health issues.
  3. Provide a greater knowledge of reproductive health issues for men and women including various contraceptive techniques.
  4. Provide an opportunity to refine skills in history, diagnosis, and management of sexually transmitted diseases.
  5. Provide an opportunity to fine tune physical exam skills under supervision.
  6. Provide exposure to women's health issues in an ambulatory environment.

Instructional Activities:

  1. Daily participation in the Family Planning Clinic, STD Clinic, and cervical cancer screening.
  2. Individual reading from subject specific textbooks and articles.
  3. Produce a publishable or presentable research topic chosen with preceptor(s) input.
  4. Interact with other social service agencies included in women's health.

Standards of Performance (Outcomes) Indicating Attainment of Objectives:

  1. Student will be primarily responsible for history gathering, physical exam, and treatment decisions of ambulatory patients presenting for care.
  2. Student will attend daily clinics with preceptor(s) oversight.
  3. Student will present cases to Family Planning staff for feedback on work-up and management.

Criteria for Grading:

  1. Goals of the rotation will be discussed initially, intermittently throughout and again at the end of the elective to assure their attainment and mutual satisfaction.
  2. The satisfactory completion of all assigned reading and research projects will be evaluated by the preceptor(s).  Deficiencies must be remedied before the completion of the elective.
  3. Student attendance, attitude, contribution to the health care team, as well as acceptable progress in clinical skills and knowledge will all be considered by the preceptor in determining the final grade.
  4. A written student evaluation will be presented to the student, appropriate campus dean and chair of the department of OB/GYN at the completion of the rotation.
