Department
Objectives of the Elective:
- This elective is primarily
designed for the student considering a residency in obstetrics and
gynecology, family practice, or who is strongly motivated to acquire
additional OB/GYN skills.
- Provide a greater knowledge
of the basic principles and practice of OB/GYN in a clinical setting.
- Become comfortable with
normal labor and delivery, including fetal monitoring and episiotomy
repair skills, and develop a recognition of high
risk pregnancy as well as a rational approach of management of common OB problems.
- Provide an opportunity to
refine skills in history taking, breast exam, pelvic exams and common
office procedures which will enhance gynecology skills of value to any
primary care physician.
- Identify interesting OB/GYN
patients, both for the student's enhanced experience and so that
individual objectives can be maximized.
Instructional Activities:
- Daily participation in
clinic, surgery, delivery and hospital rounds as designated by the
designated preceptor(s). Attendance is manditory.
- Individual reading from
standard textbooks and scientific articles to supplement clinical reading
material as directed by the preceptor(s).
- Attendance at monthly OB/GYN
Grand Rounds and other related OB/GYN meetings and conferences is
expected.
- Other related activities,
including research or formal paper, at the discretion of the preceptor(s).
Standards of Performance (Outcomes) Indicating Attainment of Objectives:
- The student will be on call
to follow labor patients, attend deliveries and evaluate ER patients as
directed.
- The student will attend
clinic, surgery and hospital rounds with appropriate emphasis on
preoperative and postoperative care.
- The student will have daily
assessment of clinical performance through case presentations and
preceptor(s) discussions.
- Specific testing, formal or
informal, of the student will be at the discretion of the preceptor(s).
Criteria for Grading:
- Goals of the rotation will be
discussed initially, intermittently throughout and again at the end of the
elective to assure their attainment and mututal
satisfaction.
- The satisfactory completion
of all assigned reading and research projects will be evaluated by the
preceptor(s). Deficiencies must be remedied before the completion of
the elective.
- Student attendance, attitude,
contribution to the health care team, as well as acceptable progress in
clinical skills and knowledge will all be considered by the preceptor(s)
in determining the final grade.
- A written student evaluation
will be presented to the student, appropriate campus dean and chair of the
department of OB/GYN at the completion of the rotation.
