Purpose: This
elective is primarily designed for the student who is strongly motivated to
acquire additional OB/GYN skills. This
elective will be particularly helpful for a student who is considering a
residency in family medicine or obstetrics and gynecology.
Objectives: Following
successful completion of this elective, the student will be able to:
1. Identify and discuss the basic principles and practice of obstetrics and gynecology in a clinical setting.
2. Demonstrate knowledge and skills in normal labor and delivery, including fetal monitoring and
episiotomy repair.
3. Recognize the signs of a high risk pregnancy.
4. Demonstrate a rational approach to common obstetrical complications.
5. Demonstrate knowledge and skills in history taking, breast exams, pap smears, pelvic exams, and
other office gynecological procedures commonly encountered in the office practice of a primary care
physician.
Instructional Activities:
During this elective, students will be involved in/experience:
1. Mandatory daily participation in clinic, surgery, delivery, and hospital rounds as directed by the
preceptor(s).
2. Individual reading from standard textbooks and scientific articles to supplement clinical material as
directed by the preceptor(s).
3. Attendance at monthly OB/GYN Grand Rounds and other assigned OB/GYN meetings and conferences.
4. Call duties to include following labor
patients, attending deliveries, and evaluating ER patients.
5. Case presentations and preceptor discussions.
6. Voluntary participation in an ongoing research project.
7. Other related activities, including testing of knowledge and skills.
Criteria for Grading: During and following this elective,
the preceptor will:
1. Judge by direct observation of clinical skills and review of the patient medical records the student’s
ability to perform an efficient history and physical exam on OB/GYN patients.
2. Evaluate by direct observation and review of the patient medical records the student’s ability to perform
the procedures noted under the objectives section..
3. Judge by direct observation the student’s level of proficiency in diagnosis and treatment of gynecological
and obstetrical conditions.
4. Judge by direct observation the student’s ability to work as a member of an integrated health team in a
professional manner.
5. Judge by direct observation and discussion the student’s ability to present cases, integrate, assess and
learn new information, and interpret the assigned reading and research.
6. Complete the standard UND 4th year evaluation form with particular attention to the skills obtained in
the items listed above.
