Eating Disorders

Location:   Neuropsychiatric Research Institute, MeritCare Hospital, and Eating Disorders Institute

Offered:  One student/period, any period

Purpose:  For students to learn about clinical eating disorders.

Objectives:  Following successful completion of this elective, the student will be able to:

  1. List the diagnostic criteria for anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa.
  2. Discuss the medical complications of eating disorders.
  3. Discuss the pharmacology of eating disorders.
  4. Discuss the psychotherapy of eating disorders.
  5. Discuss family issues in eating disorders.
  6. Discuss the psychobiolology of eating disorders.
  7. Complete a diagnostic evaluation of patients with eating disorders.

Instructional Activities:  During this elective, the student will be involved in/experience:

  1. Lectures and seminars with preceptors.
  2. Team meetings and programming on the inpatient unit.
  3. Outpatient evaluations of eating disorder patients.
  4. If interested, participation in eating disorders research activities.

Criteria for Grading:  During and following this elective, the preceptor will:

  1. Monitor the student's attendance at scheduled functions.
  2. Evaluate by direct observation the student's participation in patient management, including competency in conducting evaluations.
  3. Evaluate by direct observation the student's contribution in seminar and individual teaching sessions.
  4. Evaluate by direct observation the student's ability to work as a team member.
