Purpose:
For students to learn about clinical eating disorders.
Objectives: Following successful completion of this
elective, the student will be able to:
- List the diagnostic criteria for anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa.
- Discuss the medical complications of eating disorders.
- Discuss the pharmacology of eating disorders.
- Discuss the psychotherapy of eating disorders.
- Discuss family issues in eating disorders.
- Discuss the psychobiolology of eating disorders.
- Complete a diagnostic evaluation of patients with eating disorders.
Instructional Activities: During this elective, the student
will be involved in/experience:
- Lectures and seminars with preceptors.
- Team meetings and programming on the inpatient unit.
- Outpatient evaluations of eating disorder patients.
- If interested, participation in eating disorders research activities.
Criteria for Grading: During and following this elective,
the preceptor will:
- Monitor the student's attendance at scheduled functions.
- Evaluate by direct observation the student's participation in patient
management, including competency in conducting evaluations.
- Evaluate by direct observation the student's contribution in seminar and
individual teaching sessions.
- Evaluate by direct observation the student's ability to work as a team
member.
