INPATIENT PSYCHIATRY

Periods offered/number of students per period:   All periods/one student per period

Objectives:  Following successful completion of this elective, the student will be able to:

  1. Perform improved interviewing skills and MSE.
  2. Demonstrate an ncreased knowledge of pharmacotherapy.
  3. Manage an increase in case load.
  4. Demonstrate a deeper understanding of comorbidity and psyschodynamics.

Instructional Activities: During this elective, the student will be involved in/experience:

  1. Presenting of rounds as inservice for unit..
  2. Responsibility for specific case loads.
  3. Observed interviewing of new cases in Board format.
  4. Interactive journal club weekly X1 hour with psychiatry resident.
  5. Time for special interest pursuits will be arranged.

Criteria for Grading:  During and following this elective, the preceptor will:

  1. Daily monitor the student's attendance on the unit..
  2. Evaluate by direct observation the student on performance of interviews, presentations, and MSE (mental status exam).
  3. Grade by direct observation the student's rounds of content, presentation, and fielding of questions.
  4. Evaluate by direct observation the student's knowledge of pharmacotherapy.
  5. Observe the student's ability to work as a team member.
  6. Closely monitor all aspects of the objectives.
