Period(s) offered:  3, 5, 6, 8, 9 and 11 (may change based on Year 1 & 2 schedule)

 

Purpose:  To expose the senior student to all aspects of academic medicine by direct immersion into the PBL curriculum process.

 

Number of Students per period:  No more than 4

 

Objectives:  Following successful completion of this elective, the student will be able to:

 

1.       To expose the senior medical student to small group facilitation and to gain confidence in their ability to oversee this group educational process.

2.       To expose the senior medical student to the process of preparation, presentation and evaluation of lecture material in an academic setting.

3.       To gain experience in the interpretation of research data as presented in academic medicine journals.

4.       To give the student experience in curriculum design.

5.       To give the student experience reviewing and writing cases for education and evaluation.

6.       To expose the student to the process of evaluating other students and peers in the process of clinical skills development.

7.       To allow the student be an active member of the medical education team and to have them participate in any ongoing curriculum development.

 

Instructional Activities:  During this elective, students will be involved in/experience:

           

1.      The student will co-facilitate a PCL group with a Ph.D. or M.D.

2.      The student will attend all wrap-ups and facilitator meetings, Block Design, OME Curriculum meetings and OME Research/Journal Club meetings.

3.      The student will present an approved review of an academically relevant topic to the 1st or 2nd year students.  The topic must be related to the SOMHS’s objectives leading to the MD degree.

4.      The student will participate as a laboratory teaching assistant in all the basic science labs and in all the IPC clinical skills sessions scheduled in the block assigned.

5.      The student will write one new case for PCL (a “case-of-the-week”) working closely with the course and PCL directors.     


6.      The student will generate at least 3 MCQ test items (USMLE Step I Format) for each of 6 attended lectures (PCL or IPC). 

7.  The student will work with PCL and IPC directors in reviewing and writing case exams pertinent to the block assigned.

8.   The student will prepare one current article from publication (i.e.: Academic Medicine) and present it to the faculty at OME journal club

 

Criteria for Grading: During and following this elective, the preceptor will:

 

1.      Evaluate the student’s leadership skills and interaction in small group facilitating. 

2.      Evaluate the student’s presentations and meeting participation.

3.      Evaluate the students MCQ’s, test cases and case-of-the-week.

4.      Evaluate the senior student’s participation in clinical skills teaching.

5.      Complete the standard UND 4th year evaluation form (modified for an academic elective) with particular attention to the skills obtained in the items listed above under “Criteria for Grading”.
