Objectives of the Elective:

  1. The student will learn to evaluate nutritional status and the nutritional needs of patients.
  2. The student will learn to formulate a plan for nutritional support.
  3. The student will learn to prescribe enteral alimentation and hyper- alimentation.
  4. The student will learn to prescribe and manage parenteral hyper- alimentation.
  5. The student will learn to work effectively with the nutritional support team in the management of enteral/parenteral nutrition.

Instructional Activities:

  1. Evaluate nutritional support team patients and present to consulting physicians.
  2. Manage nutritional needs of patients and present to consulting physicians.
  3. Nutritional assessment of patients on the Family Practice Teaching Service.
  4. Outpatient nutrition at the Family Practice Center and Altru Clinic.
  5. Required readings.

Standards of Performance (Outcomes) Indicating Attainment of Objectives:

  1. The student will manage, including writing orders, for appropriate nutritional management under the direction of the consultant physician and nutritional support team.
  2. The student will write up his/her nutritional assessment of the patients he/she evaluates.
  3. The student will present a case conference or seminar on nutritional management.
  4. The student will participate as an integral part of the nutritional support team.
  5. A written evaluation will be presented to the student and to the Assistant Dean at the end of the rotation.

Criteria for Grading:

  1. Being able to succinctly define problems.
  2. Knowledge of principles in assessing route of administration of enteral feeds.
  3. Ability to accurately determine energy and protein needs.
  4. Knowledge of parenteral and enteral complications.
