Objectives of the Elective:
-
The student will learn to evaluate nutritional status and the nutritional
needs of patients.
-
The student will learn to formulate a plan for nutritional support.
-
The student will learn to prescribe enteral alimentation and hyper- alimentation.
-
The student will learn to prescribe and manage parenteral hyper- alimentation.
-
The student will learn to work effectively with the nutritional support
team in the management of enteral/parenteral nutrition.
Instructional Activities:
-
Evaluate nutritional support team patients and present to consulting physicians.
-
Manage nutritional needs of patients and present to consulting physicians.
-
Nutritional assessment of patients on the Family Practice Teaching Service.
-
Outpatient nutrition at the Family Practice Center and Altru Clinic.

Required readings.
Standards of Performance (Outcomes) Indicating Attainment of Objectives:
-
The student will manage, including writing orders, for appropriate nutritional
management under the direction of the consultant physician and nutritional
support team.
-
The student will write up his/her nutritional assessment of the patients
he/she evaluates.
-
The student will present a case conference or seminar on nutritional management.
-
The student will participate as an integral part of the nutritional support
team.
-
A written evaluation will be presented to the student and to the Assistant
Dean at the end of the rotation.
Criteria for Grading:
-
Being able to succinctly define problems.
-
Knowledge of principles in assessing route of administration of enteral
feeds.
-
Ability to accurately determine energy and protein needs.
-
Knowledge of parenteral and enteral complications.
