Recurring themes that appeared from the surveys, interviews, and evaluations of professionals and consumers were generally related to availability, accessibility, cost and lack of knowledge. More specifically issues identified were:
- lack of awareness of availability of genetic services
- lack of knowledge about genetics by professionals as well as consumers
- delays in seeing the clinical geneticist due to lack of manpower
- transportation difficulties
- cost - if specialized genetic testing is necessary
- need for more educational and training sessions in genetics
- difficulties in establishing contracts for genetic services on the Reservations
- delays in follow up
- the need to sustain comprehensive statewide clinical genetics program
Based on these identified issues the following goals were recommended to guide the development of the State Plan.
