ASSURE AND ENHANCE THE AVAILABILITY AND ACCESSIBILITY OF QUALITY AND COMPREHENSIVE GENETIC SERVICES FOR ALL
NORTH DAKOTANS

Continue to assure the availability/accessibility of genetic related services regardless of age, health status, geographic location, socio-economic status or cultural background.

  • Monitor regional & national genetics and health policy issues and activities in order to incorporate them into genetics program planning and activities
  • Maintain the genetic service network composed of genetic clinics, outreach clinics and specialty programs
  • Investigate the feasibility of providing telemedicine genetic counseling to expand services into rural areas and reduce travel requirements for both the patient/family and the genetic professional
  • Identify and disseminate culturally sensitive educational materials regarding genetics
  • Continue to ensure an adequate workforce by promoting awareness of careers in genetics for interested individuals

Assure continued financial viability of statewide clinical services

  • Explore strategies for financing genetic health care, testing and support services
  • Explore avenues for improving third party coverage and reimbursement
  • Explore possible funding sources to subsidize services for patients without insurance or ability to pay
  • Increase funding through state appropriations and grant-writing to meet the expanding genetic service needs across the state
  • Hire genetic counselors to promote and meet the service needs of North Dakota , as well as maintain current technology.
  • Identify funding opportunities to increase state and local public health capacity to respond to current and emerging technical and administrative needs relative to a comprehensive statewide genetics program

Maintain an effective genetic program with the capacity to plan, implement, monitor and evaluate

  • Maintain or improve existing data collection/reporting system to monitor service utilization for the genetics program.
  • Institute a quality assurance system to review access and quality of clinical genetics services
  • Conduct annual review of all genetics service components and identify outcome measures to demonstrate the effectiveness of genetics services
  • Analyze impact of cultural and social differences on utilization of genetic services and develop appropriate interventions
