Sids is the sudden death of an infant younger than age 1 that remains unexplained after a thorough case investigation, including a complete autopsy, examination of the death scene and review of the clinical or medical history.
SIDS is the leading cause of death in babies between 1 month and 1 year of age. And is the cause of death for approximately 2,500 babies in the USA in the year 2000.
The risk of SIDS is two and one-half times greater for American Indians than Caucasian babies and occurs more often in boys. Most SIDS deaths happen in babies who are between 2 and 4 months old. Most SIDS deaths happen in colder months.
Babies place on their tummies to sleep are much more likely to die of SIDS than babies placed on their backs to sleep.
SIDS cannot be predictied or prevented and occurs in families of ALL races and income levels.
