Dr. Joe Luger was honored
during UND's Time Out Week as one of UND's
distinguished American Indian graduates.
Dr. Luger and the other graduates are
the focus of a series of posters entitled
"More Than Beads and Feathers,"
created by UND to highlight successful
alumni. |

Graduate Dr. Richard Larson Named IHS
Physician of the Year
Dr. Richard Larson, an
INMED graduate of 1984, has been named
the Indian Health Service Physician of
the Year. Dr. Larson was awarded this
honor for his important work at the Quentin
Burdick Memorial Healthcare Facility in
Belcourt where he provides quality health
care services for Native Americans and
others in North Dakota. |

Medical Students Complete Norwegian Exchange
Program
INMED
students Tracy Tuggle Newman (center,
front) and Nicole Veitenheimer (not pictured)
spent a month in the fall of 2005 in northern
Norway in the communities of Tromso and
Tana River providing healthcare to the
native Sami people of the region. The
students are fourth-year medical students
at UNDSMHS. Students from the Tromso medical
school will work here in North Dakota
at the Quentin N. Burdick Memorial Healthcare
Facility.

Indian Health
Service Representative Visits UND Campus
Kim
Lawrence, Scholarship Coordinator for
the IHS Aberdeen, SD, Area Office, visited
the University of North Dakota on January
19th, where she spoke to a group of
about 40 prospective scholarship and
externship applicants. On January 20th,
she visited with the INMED medical school
applicants regarding IHS scholarships
and “payback.”

INMED
Student Named AMA Foundation Minority
Scholar
Christina
Brown, a third-year medical student at
the University of North Dakota School
of Medicine and Health Sciences (UNDSMHS),
has been named an American Medical Association
Foundation Minority Scholar. Only ten
medical students in the country are given
the award, which includes a $10,000 scholarship.
The Minority
Scholar Award recognizes scholastic achievement
and promise for the future among students
in groups defined as “historically
under-represented” in the medical
profession. The award was given to recognize
Brown’s excellence as a medical
student and her outstanding promise for
a future career in medicine. |

Dr.
Judith Kaur Receives Award from INMED
Director Eugene DeLorme
Dr. Judith Kaur, an
INMED graduate of 1979 who is now at
the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, was
a Distinguished Alumni Symposium Speaker
during the UND School of Medicine and
Health Sciences Centennial on September
30, 2005. Dr. Kaur spoke on “Cancer
Care in Native Americans.”
