The Center for Health Promotion at the University of North Dakota School of Medicine and Health Sciences was established in 2001 by Vice President of Health Affairs and Dean, H. David Wilson, M.D. The Center for Health Promotion is supported by funding from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), U.S. Department of Health and Human Services; and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Dr. Nancy Vogeltanz-Holm directs the Center for Health Promotion which is administratively affiliated with both the Department of Neuroscience (Dr. James Mitchell, Chair) and the Center for Rural Health (Dr. Mary Wakefield, Director) in the School of Medicine and Health Sciences.

Mission and Goals of the Center for Health Promotion

The Center for Health Promotion's mission is to work with local, state, and tribal organizations to develop a comprehensive, state-wide effort for promoting health, reducing disease, and eliminating health disparities for all youth and adults in North Dakota. Our current focus is on the prevention and reduction of tobacco use, and the prevention and reduction of obesity. To achieve this goal, we are currently engaged in three areas:

  1. the establishment of cooperative networks and partnerships involved in health promotion;
  2. providing educational, technical, and evaluation services to local, state,and tribal health promotion and public health groups; and
  3. the development, implementation, and evaluation of evidence-based prevention programs to determine the efficacy and effectiveness of prevention programs for North Dakota adults and youth.
