Continuing Medical Education
The University of North Dakota School of Medicine strives to improve human health through education, research and patient care. The University of North Dakota provides continuing medical education (CME) to physicians and interprofessional teams to promote lifelong learning that will enhance professional competence and performance and improve patient outcomes.
The UND SMHS CME office delivers the highest quality educational activities, through the range of clinical, research, medical teaching, public health, and healthcare leadership skills. Content of CME activities addresses the needs of practicing physicians and interprofessional teams. CME includes all areas of biomedical knowledge, clinical skills and patient care, interpersonal and communication skills, ethics and professionalism, practice-based learning and improvement, and systems-based practice.
The scope of activities involves the body of knowledge and skills generally recognized and accepted by the profession as within the basic medical sciences, the discipline of clinical medicine, and the provision of health care to the public. The OCMEO will ensure the quality of education programs by adhering to the guidelines and standards established by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME).
The target audience of the UND SMHS CME includes faculty, residents, community physicians and healthcare professionals within the state, region, and nation.
Type of Activities
The CME office offers a variety of formats for learning activities including topic-specific conferences, regularly scheduled courses, regularly scheduled series (RSS), interactive audio and videoconferencing, faculty and professional improvement activities, enduring materials for traditional or internet distribution. Learning activities may be directly sponsored or jointly sponsored.
Expected Program Results
Within the framework of the challenges of a rural state, the ultimate goal of the CME program at the University of North Dakota is to help physicians gain the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to provide safe, high quality health care to their patients. The CME OFFICE offers the physicians of North Dakota the opportunity to improve their essential clinical medical knowledge and competencies by:
- Dissemination of new medical knowledge.
- Assist in the maintenance of professional certification and license
- Enhance the quality of the educational process through collaboration and continued improvement in compliance with accreditation standards/criteria
The CME program will evaluate outcomes changes in physician and team member competence as demonstrated by physician and team member learning or improved physician and team member skills or enhanced self-efficacy, and/or performance improvement as demonstrated by physician a nd team member intention to change, identification of barriers to change, or actual practice change and/or improved patient outcomes measured at the population level.
