Admission Requirements
The following information on admission requirements and recommendations apply to both MS and PhD program applicants. The application process occurs through the Graduate School. Information and forms are available from the UND Graduate School.
If further advice or help would be beneficial to an applicant's decision-making process, we encourage her or him to contact our Director of Graduate Education, Dr. Jane Dunlevy, who can be reached by e-mail. If you are in the North Dakota area, we encourage you to set up a time to meet with us.
Note: The department is pleased to answer any of your questions regarding our curriculum and training. However, the department will not comment on an applicant's suitability prior to reviewing a completed application; therefore, please do not e-mail or mail the department your GRE scores, TOEFL scores, or university grades. Please note that such e-mails will not be considered or receive a response.
Coursework:
Admission into the graduate program is dependent upon the applicant's demonstration of effective academic skills and appropriate undergraduate training. Minimally, the applicant will have complted successfully the following coursework:
- General biology or zoology (one year sequence)
- General chemistry (one year sequence)
- Organic chemistry
- College algebra
Preference for admission will be given to applicants who have completed coursework in at least one of the following areas: cell biology, human anatomy, comparative anatomy, histology, developmental biology/embryology, or biochemistry.
Coursework in physics, molecular biology, or genetics is highly recommended.
Applicants must have a cumulative undergraduate GPA of at least 3.00, and, if applicable, a cumulative GPA of 3.50 in graduate level course work. Scores from the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) General Test must be submitted with the application.
Application Deadline:
There is no application deadline per se. However, it is better to apply early as applications and decisions on stipend support are reviewed on a first come-first served basis starting March 1. Therefore, we encourage applicants to submit their application materials to the Graduate School by mid-February.
